WORDS TO STUDY

Sport in general
The playing area for football, rugby, jockey and cricket is called a pitch. For tennis, volleyball, basketball, squash and badminton it is a court, for golf it is a course. People who watch match are called spectators or crowd. Some games are played by individual, others are team games. In a team one player is the captain, and there is a manager or a coach. Football, rugby, and hockey have a referee but tennis, cricket and baseball have an umpire. In football the referee has a whistle to control the game and two linesmen. In tennis there are line judges to decide if the ball is in or out.

Scores
We say football scores like this:
2 - 1They won/lost two – one.4 - 4They drew four all.
2 - 0They won/lost two – nil.0 - 0They drew nil – nil.
It was nil – nil.

People who do particular sports
-ER can be used for many sports (footballer, swimmer, windsurfer, high-jumper, cricketer, golfer etc.)
PLAYER is often necessary (tennis-player, snooker-player, darts-player). We can also say football-player, cricket-player. Some names must be learnt separately (canoeist, mountaineer, jockey, archer, gymnast).

About games
In football, rugby, hockey and basketball, if the ball goes off the pitch or court, it is out of play. In racquet sports and volleyball, if the ball lands outside the line, we say the ball is out. If it lands on or inside the line, we say it is in. The goalkeeper is often just called the keeper. Attacking wide players are sometimes called wingers or we say: He plays on the left wing.

Summer sports: aquatics, archery, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, canoe – kayak, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football, gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, modern pentathlon, rowing, sailing, shooting, softball, table-tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling. Racquet sports
Badminton is played with a shuttlecock. Badminton, tennis, squash are racquet sports. Table-tennis is played with a bat. Note that racquet can also be spelled racket. In the United States football is called soccer. If you play tennis or golf you must know these words: Tennis: serve, ace, return, forehand, backhand, smash, topspin, slice, net, baseline, tramlines. Golf: drive, chip, putt, tee, fairway, bunker, green, bogey, par, birdie, eagle.

Deuce

If the score is deuce and Smith wins the next point, we say Advantage Smith.

Athletics
There are two types of athletics event: track events are all those which take place on the running track, all other events, except the marathon, are field events. The event when you have to hop, step, and jump is called the triple jump. A sprint is a short race – 100 metres. The 800, 1500 and 3000 metre races are middle-distance events. A long distance race is 5000 metres or more.

He holds the record for the 100 metres breast-stroke.
Liverpool beat Hamburg 4-2 yesterday.
The team have never been defeated (more formal than beat).
