Sensei Damon Umholtz
Lecturer
Native Philadelphian, Sensei Damon Umholtz has been involved in the Martial Arts most of his life. He has studied with many great teachers and has several black belts including Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Jiu-Jitsu. Sensei Umholtz is also a Pro MMA, Muay Thai, Boxing Coach/Trainer and a Weapons Expert, but it is his Urban Combat and Self-Defense System he is most proud of.
In 1990 he founded the “Umholtz Philadelphia Mixed Martial Arts Academy” also known as “Philadelphia Jiu-Jitsu” and since then his name has become somewhat synonymous with “Philadelphia Mixed Martial Arts” and “Philadelphia Jiu-Jitsu”. In 1999 he received an award from Mayor Ed Rendell and Police Commissioner Timoney for his "outstanding contribution to the Philadelphia community". For over two decades Sensei Umholtz has been a pioneer in the Mixed Martial Arts world community teaching both locally and internationally literally thousands of people his unique application of Mixed Martial Arts.
At 150lbs, Sensei Umholtz has had to explore and apply the more technical side of Mixed Martial Arts Self-Defense and Urban Combat to be able to compete with and dominate larger, stronger opponents. Unlike many other Mixed Martial Arts teachers, Damon believes Mixed Arts practice is a Spiritual way of life balancing both the principles of the Ancient Arts with modern scientific innovations. Although he has produced many champion sport Jiu-Jitsu and MMA fighters, he believes true Mixed Martial Arts is much more then mere cage fighting and regardless of whether a student wishes to be competitive or not, the application and practice of the Art of “Umholtz Mixed Martial Arts” will create positive energy in peoples lives.
Sensei Umholtz’s focus as a teacher is not only to train great fighters and competitors, but also to help his students realize their full potential, to motivate them to achieve their goals and to believe in themselves. He has worked with Beginner to Olympic level, Amateur to Professional and his “hands on” teaching method allows for great attention to detail of an individuals needs. His own experience teaching has taught him that learning is strengthened and deepened by the act of teaching itself; and so he encourages all his students to freely share their insights and to help others.
