The 4th Summer School of Combatives at Faculty of Sports Studies, Masaryk University took place on 3rd - 6th September 2015.
The fourth Summer School of Combatives focused on two areas: traditional Okinawan martial art karate and very popular Brazilian jiu-jitsu. So those who prefer traditional styles enjoyed karate lectures under the guidance of British teacher Lyn Jehu and proponents ground fighting improved their skills with Polish lecturer Lubomir Grochocki. Students earned 4 ECTS.

Programme details
BJJ-GI
Brazilian jiu-jitsu training using the traditional suit GI (equipment: trousers, jacket, belt).
BJJ-NO GI
Brazilian jiu-jitsu training without the traditional suit GI (equipment: shorts, T-shirt).
TAKE DOWNS
Brazilian jiu-jitsu training training focusing on throwing techniques (equipment: GI = trousers, jacket, belt).
SPARING
Brazilian jiu-jitsu training focusing on wrestling practice. Recommended equipment: mouthguard, knee guard, tape.
Karate conditioning
- Arm and leg conditioning drills.
- Resistance bands for punching, kicking, stance training.
- Pad and kicking shield drills and exercises.
- Kettle Bells
- Resistance exercises
- Use of belts for resistance training
Kata & Bunkai, Oyo
- Kata in detail – practice the kata in many different ways in order to understand its meaning. Break the kata down into small sections, perform it in mirror image, perform the kata with resistance bands. Practice range of bunkai drills from basic to more advance such as flow drills. Practice the kata techniques on impact pads.
- Comparison of “modern” kata with older Okinawa kata and bunkai.
Kumite
- different types of kumite practice

Theory
- Lecture about Lyn Jehu five years lasting experience in Japan.
- Cultural differences and tips for any foreigner who wants to visit and train in Japan.

Head coach of Pretorian club BJJ, SF, MMA, master of physical education, 2nd class wrestling trainer. Instructor of self-defence, conditioning and gymnastics. Brazilian jiu-jitsu qualification: Blue belt by Strauch Mauricio Paulo - Rio de Janeiro 2008, purple belt by Piotr Bagi Baginski - Koźmin Wielkopolski 2008, brown by Piotr Bagi Baginski - Koźmin Wielkopolski 2011, black belt by Fellipe Costa and Piotr Bagi Baginski - Szczecin 2013.

Lyn Jehu
Lecturer
Faculty of Education and Social Science University of South Wales. Technical Demonstrator for Sport and Psychology. Technical degree: 2nd dan Shotokan karate, 3rd dan Tani Ha Shito Ryu karate, 3rd dan Okinawa Goju Ryu. Also studied Okinawa kobudo and Niten Ichi Ryu ken jutsu while living in Japan for five years. Currently runs karate study and research group at University of South Wales. Research interests include mental toughness in martial arts and the influence of Japanese budo on modern Japanese sport.
